2.【题文】The Pew report---which was based on surveys carried out in Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Poland and the Czech Republic --- concluded that the European Union was ― the new sick man of Europe‖.

The percentage of Europeans with a favorable view of the EU has plunged from 60 percent last year to 45 percent now.

The UK may be considered the most Eurosceptic(欧洲怀疑论者)country, but its support for the union has barely changed in the past 12 months, slipping only two points to 43 percent.

By contrast, France‘s backing for the EU has slipped sharply, from 60 percent last year to 41 percent today.

On the question of whether to remain in the EU, 46 percent of the British want to leave the union and surprisingly, the same percentage went to stay.

The Pew report‘s authors said, ―The long-drawn economic crisis has created bad forces that are pulling European public opinion apart, separating the French from the Germans and Germans from everyone else.‖

They added, ―The effort over the past half century to create a more united Europe is now the main disaster of the euro crisis. The European project now stands in a bad reputation across much of Europe.‖

The only European leader rated highly by their own voters was the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, with 74 percent voters in favor of her.

Prime Minister David Cameron was the next highest with a positive score of 37 percent among the British public, although he can take some comfort from the fact that 58 percent of Poles and half of all French people think he is doing a good job.

In spite of the dark economic future and growing doubt of the EU, there were strong majorities of more than 60 percent in favor of keeping the euro in the five countries surveyed that use the single currency.[]

1. Which of the following is TRUE about the recent Pew report?

A. The UK has the smallest number of people against the EU.

B. There‘s a slight change of the UK‘s support for the EU.

C. More than half the Germans raise doubt about the EU.

D. A vast majority of French people are in favor of the EU.

2. As to whether to remain in the EU, ______.

A. The British are divided equally B. few British want to stay

C. half British want to leave D. many British don‘t care about it

3. What‘s the Pew report‘s authors‘ attitude towards the relation between France and Germany?

A. Enthusiastic. B. Optimistic. C. Negative. D. Neutral.

4. Why does Prim Minister David Cameron feel a little bit comfortable?

A. Only a score of 37 percent of Britons go against him.

B. Many of the Poles and French think well of him.

C. More than 60 percent of the Europeans are in favor of keeping the euro.

D. Angela Merkel has 74 percent voters supporting her.

Tour guide: OK, shall we go now? The car is waiting for us outside.

Guest: Yes, let’s go.

4 Discussing the ltinerary

Mr. Smith is a tour escort. His group has just checked in at the hotel. Wu Ming is the local guide. Mr. Smith: It seems everything is OK. Shall we start discussing the itinerary?

Wu Ming: Oh, yes. Have you got anything special in mind that you would like to see?

Mr. Smith: I think you know your city better than I do. To tell you the truth, my tour members are

not at all happy about the travel arrangements for this China tour. You know we only have

three days in Beijing. In such a short time, how can we possibly visit a city like Beijing

that has so many world-famous places of interest?

Wu Ming: Don’t be upset, Mr. Smith. I promise I’ll make the best use of the time and try to let you

see as many places as possible.

Mr. Smith: Thank you, Mr. Wu. It’s really very considerate of you.

Wu Ming: This is the tentative itinerary I’ve worked out. Would you please go over the details? Mr. Smith: Sure. ( Going over the itinerary. )

Don’t you think it would be better to visit Chairman Mao’s Memorial Hall on Sunday

rather than on a weekday?

Wu Ming: Why is that? It is very crowded on Sunday.

Mr. Smith: That’s exactly what I mean. We’d like to see how the Chinese people pay homage to this

great man.

Wu Ming: If we go on Sunday, we will spend several hours waiting in line. We will have to cancel

the other destination we have planned.

Mr. Smith: I don’t see what the problem would be with seeing Chairman Mao’s Memorial Hall and

the other places we talk about all on the same day.

Wu Ming: I don’t think you realize how many people will be visiting Chairman Mao’s Memorial

Hall on Sunday and how long it will take us to go through these sites.

Mr. Smith: We would really like to see it on Sunday.

Wu Ming: Whatever you prefer.

Mr. Smith: Here ( pointing to the itinerary ), why don’t we visit a few more places of interest before

lunch, and find a fast-food restaurant instead of this fancy Dragon Restaurant?

Wu Ming: I’ve thought about that. There is a fast-food restaurant, McDonald’s, right on Wangfujing

Street, a very popular shopping area and a pedestrian street as well. We could stop there

for lunch. Some of the tour members may enjoy walking along the street.

Mr. Smith: I’m sure all the tour members would like that. What time do you want us to check out

and leave for the airport?

Wu Ming: 11 o’clock.

Mr. Smith: But that is almost the rush hour. I think we’d better make it 10:30, in case we get caught

in traffic.

Wu Ming: You are very thoughtful. I can see you are a very experienced escort. We should prepare

for the worst. By the way, can I take the group to a couple of souvenir shops while

sightseeing?

Mr. Smith: Please pick out just one. You’d better not spend too much time on shopping, because it’s

not part of our schedule.

Wu Ming: I’ll remember that. Do I take it then that we’re agreed?

Mr. Smith: Yes, I think so. I’m quite happy with the itinerary. Everything seems to be in order.

Wu Ming: Good. Well, let’s call it a day then, shall we? I’m sure you’ve a lot to get started. This is

my cell phone number ( pointing at the itinerary ). Don’t hesitate to get in touch with

me, will you, if you run into any problems?

Mr. Smith: Certainly.

Dialogue I In the Dining Hall

Tour guide: We have a table reservation at 7:30, and would like to confirm it, please.

Waiter : What’s your name, please?

Tour guide: My name is Delson. I’m in charge of an American group.

Waiter : Yes, there are 26 of you. Would you like to have the Continental Breakfast?

Tour guide: No, we’d like to have a Club Breakfast. May I have a look at the menu, because I’d like

to order now it possible?

Waiter : Good. Here you are.

Tour guide: Let’s see. We’d like the No. 3.

Waiter : How would you like your eggs?

Tour guide: Sunny-side up with ham for everybody but two.

Waiter : All right. What about the other two people? Do they want anything special?

Tour guide: Yes, they don’t care for eggs. They’d like French toast instead. Would that be possible? Waiter : Noproblem. Now let me show you your table. Would you like to have dinner at the same

hour tomorrow?

Tour guide: No, I’d like to make it 7:30. Waiter : We are going to have a couple more groups tomorrow night, but I’ll manage.

Later in the afternoon in a shopping center, Wang Ping helps Bridget Shell choose a real silk shirt at the silk fabric counter.

Saleslady: Good afternoon, madam. Are you being served?

Bridget Shell: Good afternoon. I'm looking for a silk shirt for my

husband. Would you show me some, please?

Saleslady: Certainly. We have a wide selection of silk shirts here.

But what size, please?

Bridget Shell: Large.

Saleslady: How do you like these?

Bridget Shell: Oh, how nice!
